The #1 People Principle

The #1 People Principle:
“Never let the situation mean more than the relationship.”

For years, I allowed my ego to get in the way of my relationships.
For years, I allowed small disagreements to tear me apart from meaningful relationships.
For years, I put the situation ahead of my friendships. Perhaps it was my age and immaturity at the time.

Perhaps a dose of perspective and bigger thinking. Without a doubt, you know you’re growing as a leader of emotional intelligence when you realize it’s more rewarding to resolve a situation than dissolve a relationship.

When I coach one-on-one with my executive leadership clients, I ask them to take a hard look and think about their personal and professional relationships. I ask them to look at the following lists and determine which words best describe them:

  • Unstable or Steady
  • Closed or Open
  • Selfish or Serving
  • Draining or Energizing
  • Insecure or Confident
  • Conditional or Compassionate
  • Ruling or Gracious
  • Performance or Giving
Coaching Questions:
  • What relationship do you need to shore up that matters a lot to you?
  • How prone are you to damage long-term relationships? What can you change to break that unhealthy pattern?
  • Under what circumstances does a relationship legitimately become less important than the situation?
  • Have you been able to repair an important relationship in the last 6-12 months?
  • Have you apologized?
  • What can you do going forward to improve or restore that relationship?
