Three Keys to the Power of Commitment

I keep a post-it-note that reads, “commitment is a decision, not a feeling.”

I remember clearly when I was writing our new co-authored, best-selling book, Lead With No Fear. There were days when I didn’t feel committed to writing and completing our book. But I’ve discovered the secret to lasting commitment is to make sure it’s based on a rational decision, not a feeling.

Big thought: At the most basic level, a commitment is a promise or pledge you make to yourself.
Practice thought: Commitment requires the daily decision to stick with it.

Where do you need to re-commit?
• In your professional pursuits?
• In clarity of vision in challenging times?
• In shifting from victim mindset to a leader mindset?
• In specific goals for the next 90 days?
• In lifting team spirit– being a leader of hope rather than despair?

Now is your time!

Here are Three Keys to the Power of Commitment:

Key #1 Doing unpleasant tasks creates healthy emotions.
Sitting around and sliding into a pity party only creates unhealthy emotions that drive disastrous results.
It may sound simple but each day, create three work goals that are a bit unpleasant. It will generate positive emotions. It will also generate a level of commitment for that day.
Stack 30 days together with 3 work goals each day (five days a week) 90 work goals completed for the month!

Key #2 Perfect it as you go
One of the best decisions I made when I launched Steve Gutzler and Leadership Quest was that I had no business plan. I did have a purpose and vision and I was able to “get started” and perfect the plan as I moved out each day.
Don’t fixate on perfection, perfect it as you go!

Key #3 Set goals
A commitment without goals is like a trip without GPS. Odds are, you’ll end up someplace you didn’t want to be.

GOAL SETTING FOR LEADERS

It might sound old school but post your top 3 goals you’ve written on a 3×5 card right next to your work station. I also keep a set on my bathroom mirror and on my nightstand.
Over 2 decades ago, I went to a Zig Ziglar motivational event where he said he did that. I’ve been doing that practice ever since.
Seeing your goals helps you seize your goals (clear goals create commitment).
