Emotional Intelligence and Extraordinary Attitudes

How is your attitude?

I asked one of my Executive Leadership Coaching clients that same question a few months ago. I sensed his attitude had slipped into a negative tone. He went on and listed a number of things that were not working with he and his team. He then went on to list a series of personal challenges.

My challenge to you: For the next 40-days, make subtle shifts in your attitude to make it more positive. Even if it’s one small change each day.

True story, business breakthroughs, team unity, and personal turning points come when you break through a slump.

Big idea: How is your attitude and how is it affecting those you work with?

I love the example in Ancient Israel when Goliath came up against the Hebrews, the soldiers all thought he was so big that they could never kill him. David looked at the same giant and thought, “He’s so big, I can’t miss.”

The Stanford Research Institute says that the money you make in any endeavor is determined only 12.5% by knowledge and 87.5% by your emotional intelligence—your attitude and ability to deal with people.

Here are a few things to keep in mind:
1. Our attitude determines our perspective and our approach to life’s challenges.
2. Our attitude determines our relationships with people we work with.
3. Our attitude is the only difference between success and failure.

Growing up, my father used to always tell me, “Steve, change the channel.” The channel he was referring to was my attitude. I’ve learned there are a lot of things that are out of my control but my attitude, I have 100% control of that.

What adjustment can you make? Even a 3-5% upgrade in your attitude can enhance the quality of your business, network, team, marriage, and friendships.

My final challenge to you is: In the next 40 days, put a “PA” at your work station—a “positive attitude” reminder.

Here’s to your “PA” and keeping positive!
