You are Contagious with Your Emotions– Be Intentional!

Often when I speak on the power of emotions in leadership, I remind people:

“You are contagious with your emotions, and hopefully people are catching the right ones.”

A few years ago, I worked with an organization whose leader was volatile and unstable in his emotions. As a result, the team felt anxious and always on edge. People walked on pins and needles wondering “What type of mood is Mr. Leader in today? Grouchy or happy?”.

No matter what position you hold, remember that you are contagious with your emotions. The best leaders are intentional with the type of emotions they spread.

Research from HeartMath Institute shows that when you have positive feelings, it goes to every cell in the body and then outward– and amazingly, people up to 10 feet away can sense the feelings you are transmitting!

  • Make your emotional transfers count!
  • Be self-aware of your emotions.
  • Reset and redirect negative emotions.
  • Use uplifting and positive body language.
  • Take a short break to realign your emotions to your intentions.
  • Discipline yourself to be a positive leader.
  • Recognize your energy and how it affects others.

You are the positive emotion to your team– like a mega-dose of Vitamin C!

When the great Winston Churchill led Great Britain during WWII for its survival against Hitler, people commented on his positive zeal and spirit. He spread the contagious energy of courage and said “The British people will not only survive, we will thrive!”

Commit today to being intentional with the emotions of a great leader!
