The Secret: Getting the Best from Others

I want to ask you a question:

“Who was your best teacher– your favorite teacher of all time?”

Mine was Ms. Landers in the fourth grade.

  • She made learning fun.
  • She wore a funny outfit on Fridays.
  • She believed in me before I believed in myself.
  • She was positive and energetic.
  • The very best thing? She played dodgeball with us at recess.
  • In short, she treated each of us as a “10”.

If we really want to shine as a leader others want to follow, please remember:

  1. See others for who they are becoming.
  2. See others as a “10” and treat them as a “10”.
  3. See others doing things right, not wrong.
  4. See others through a lens of possibilities. You may be the best leader they ever followed.
  5. See others as a gift in your life. They are human beings, not machines.

Note: At the end of my fourth-grade year, my academics turned around. She taught me the love of learning and made each week enjoyable. Her zest, sparkle, and joy rubbed off on me. I felt like a “10”!

I’ve learned that most leaders treat people according to the number that they place on them.

You are a 2? You get a “2” treatment.
You are a 4? You get a “4” treatment.
You are a 7? You get a “7” treatment.

Remember, people usually rise to their leader’s expectations if they like the leader.

Begin today to see and lead people as they can be, not just as you see them now. You’ll be amazed by how they respond to you.

Here’s to treating others like a “10”!
