The Power of Three Good Things

Martin Seligman, a psychology professor at the University of Pennsylvania, developed many of the ideas used today in the field of positive psychology. He created an exercise I’ve added to my nightly routine called three good things. Seligman suggested that each night, just before bedtime, people think of three good things that happened during that day– especially how they helped bring those good things about.

Positive Key: Those positive memories are then processed during our REM sleep and the science shows we’ll wake up more optimistic and confident.

My example for tonight:
I am thankful… 1) I had a wonderful 2-mile walk with my wife Julie and our little Maltese dog, Sadie. It was a beautiful sunny morning with fresh air.
I am thankful… 2) I completed a new proposal for a company we’ll look forward to partner with.
I am thankful… 3) for one of my key coaching client’s progress and the planning of our second year of leadership engagement.

Note: My wife also has placed a post-it note on our refrigerator with two words:

Be thankful!
Each morning, I start the day off thankful.

You’ll sleep more sound– you’ll wake up more optimistic and confident. By the way, I am thankful for you!

Here’s to your three good things!
