How to Completely Change Adversity Into a Winning Advantage

What hardships have you faced?
What adversity is draining your focus and energy?

Oftentimes, I open my keynote programs with a statement about adversity and how it has become my friend, mentor, and coach. I am by no means saying I jump up and down looking for adversity, but in deep hardships, I’ve discovered hidden jewels.

Had it not been for a four month unemployment journey, I would have never started my business, Leadership Quest. That defining moment helped me change my view of adversity.

Here are three tools to guide you in changing adversity into a winning advantage:
1. Adversity is an opportunity to stop going fast and slow down for self-discovery.
Adversity provides the courage to look at ourselves and be introduced to the person we can become.

2. Adversity helps define what success looks like.
During my four month unemployment, I finally took the time to write down my top five values. Those values became the daily gauge for success:

  • Faith at my center
  • Family first
  • Work hard
  • Leadership (inspire others)
  • Have fun
Success is the feeling I get when I live my values.

3. Adversity opens new doors of growth, maturity, and opportunity.
Rick Warren says, “We don’t change when we see the light, we change when we feel the heat!” I believe Warren’s statement is so very true…

Take a moment to identify your adversity, look for self-discovery, look for how you define success, and look for new doors for growth and opportunity.
