9 Leadership Styles:
The Real Secret Isn’t the Label—It’s the Pivot
For three decades now, I’ve had a front-row seat to the beautiful, messy, and incredibly human act of leadership. I’ve been in the room when a leader’s presence turned anxiety into alignment, and I’ve stood on the sidelines when a leader defaulted to frustration and watched a team’s energy just… drain right out of the room.
It’s never about the title on the door. It’s about the emotional agility in the room.
Here’s what I’ve seen up close and personal: The leaders who thrive, the ones who navigate change without leaving a trail of confusion and burnout, don’t have one move. They have a playbook. The most emotionally agile leaders I know can read the temperature of the room—and the urgency of the moment—and pivot accordingly.
Most of us have a default. A go-to posture that feels like home base. And that’s wonderful. But the magic happens when the winds of change start blowing and you’re able to adjust your sails.
So, let’s get personal for a moment. Which of these describes your natural, comfortable groove? And more importantly, which one might you need to borrow this week?
(Whether you’re an individual contributor leading through influence or you’re steering a large ship, this is for you.)
Please hear me on this: Your team does not need a perfect leader. They’ve never met one, and frankly, they wouldn’t trust one if they did. What they need is an authentic one. A leader who is self-aware enough to know their own default setting, and brave enough to adapt when the situation—and the people—require a different touch.
Greatness isn’t about being rigid. It’s about being responsive.
So, look at that list again.
What’s your primary style? The one you reach for first?
And here’s the million-dollar question: Which one or two do you need to intentionally adjust to this month?
I’d love for you to share this with your team or a colleague who might need a gentle reminder that leadership is an art, not a science.
Here’s to leading better—and being human while we do it.
