8 Reasons Why Your Brain Loves Exercise
I credit my father for my love of exercise.
As a young boy, I’d watch him come home after a long day at our family restaurant, lace up his running shoes, and head out for a 2–3 mile run. When he got back, he’d head straight to our basement for a round of pushups and a few sets with his old-school weights.
He kept a little logbook with goals and progress. No fanfare. No Instagram stories. Just quiet, steady consistency.
You know the saying: “Values are caught, not just taught.”
Before long, I was tagging along on those runs… and eventually creating my own log of reps, weights, and goals. Fast forward a few decades—and this afternoon, I’ll be at the gym with my 8-year-old grandson, Kannon. We’ve got a special tradition we call our “Pops Workout.”
We train for strength.
We train for energy.
We train for confidence and connection.
And lately, I’ve been reminded that we also train… for our brains.
Now, I probably won’t bore my grandson with the science (he’s more interested in beating me at pushups), but I will share it with you:
Here are 8 reasons your brain loves when you move your body:
So whether you’re walking the dog, dancing in the kitchen, or hitting the gym—know this: every time you move, your brain says thank you.
And today, I want to say thank you, too.
Dad, you’re 92, and you’re still inspiring me.
Thank you for the gift of movement and modeling a value I hope to pass down to Kannon.
Friends—show your brain some love this week. Move. Stretch. Walk. Lift. Dance. Breathe.
And share this with someone you care about.
Here’s to your healthy brain—and a life of strength, clarity, and joy.
With gratitude,
