Feedback the Breakfast of Champions: 10 Keys

In order to grow your capacity as a personal leader of high performance, feedback is essential.

If you are in the role of providing feedback, here are ten vital keys that can advance your words into positive action:
1. Open Desire
Ask for permission as you initiate the discussion.

2. Be Clear and Concise
Use candid, honest words that are easily understood. Fewer, precise words delivered in a straightforward manner have more impact.

3. Frame it in Positive Tones
Be genuine, authentic, positive, and hopeful.

4. Be Observable
Tell the leader what you have observed such as, “I noticed that when you speak about ideas and solutions you go into great detail and sometimes lose your listeners.”

5. Be Sincere
Be genuine and express that we all have “blind spots” and limiting capacities we have grown through to get to the next level.

6. Make it Actionable
It should be laid out as a specific behavior that can shift and be done differently. Put together a mutual plan of action.

7. Accompanied with your Support
Think in terms of partnership, working together, and adding support and resources. A suggested book or peer-to-peer coaching of best practices.

8. Identify the Impact
If we don’t address this, you may be missing your unique potential. This blind spot may grow and have a negative impact for growth and personal success. “When you don’t communicate praise for people for a job well done, they may feel you don’t care or approve of them.”

9. Phrase it as a Statement
Asking a question like, “Do you believe that you follow through on your personal commitments or sometimes miss the follow through?” or “Let’s see this as an opportunity on closing the gaps and increasing your influence.”

10. No Pile-on or Judgement
Don’t exaggerate. Remove judgement. It’s all about shifting a potential weakness into a sustainable strength and new series of success!

Reminder: Authentic, truthful feedback can be a fantastic gift. Always check your heart before you provide your thoughts. The goal is to always unleash your leaders full potential.
