How Leaders Influence People

Who has influenced you the most?

Who believed in you when you struggled to believe in yourself?

Who offered you encouragement and hope that unlocked your self-esteem?

Dennis Rainey tells a powerful story about a young boy named Tommy. He had a particularly hard time at school. He struggled at some of the basics. He continually asked questions and he never could quite keep up. Falling further and further behind, the teacher finally gave up on him and told his mother that he simply couldn't learn and would never amount to much. 

Thankfully, Tommy's mother was an influencer. She believed in him and knew his self-esteem needed repairing, rebuilding and personal renewal. She taught him from home and with each setback she kept his spirits up. She poured in hope and encouragement. She built personal belief in him and said "keep going, keep trying, find a way."

Whatever happened to Tommy? He became a successful inventor, eventually holding more than one thousand patents, including the phonograph and the first electric lightbulb. His name? The great Thomas Edison. When people believe in us and influence us in powerful ways, there is no telling how far they can go.

Here's a short list of ways we can influence others, starting today:

  • Commit to a core-group who you will influence in positive ways (list their names)
  • Believe in them, set high expectations
  • Be present and accessible, make some time devoted to them
  • Provide opportunities, get them out "on stage"
  • Lift them to a higher level and celebrate their success

Your influence can be the GIFT to unlock their potential. 

Here's to positively influencing others, starting this week!
